A Little Bit of Sunshine

Welcome to the Writing corner of the site, a place for essays, reflections, and short pieces between projects.

I've always believed that a story, like a good morning, is mostly a matter of light. You can point it at anything: a kitchen table, a bus stop, a rehearsal room at the wrong end of the day, and suddenly the ordinary thing has an inside to it.

Why write it down

Performance is generous but forgetful. A scene lives in the room and then it's gone. Writing is the opposite: slow, stubborn, and yours to keep. Putting the two next to each other has taught me things I couldn't learn from either alone:

• What a character wants is rarely what they say.
• Silence is a line of dialogue.
• The audience finishes every sentence you don't.

Bring a little bit of sunshine, and let the room decide what to do with it.
